CV Writing

From our experience within the education industry, we feel that the following guidelines are a good starting place to write an effective up to date CV. 

Head teachers, governors, and senior management teams will be reading your CV and it is key to grab their attention immediately and not fill your CV with needless 'waffle' which is a common tendency when writing a CV. Sometimes less is more!

Personal Information
Just include your basic details: Name, address and details for a potential employer to contact you (telephone numbers, email address, etc).

Opening Statement
It is good to start your CV with a brief personal statement highlighting the following:

  • Your teaching style
  • Your strengths
  • Career aspirations
  • Observation gradings (From Ofsted, LEA, University and SLT)
  • Teaching results (Phonics, SATs, GCSEs and A Level)

In this section it is important to be clear, accurate and concise, and to avoid sweeping statements. This is where first impressions are created.

Teaching Experience (or school placements for NQTs)
This is the who, what and where of your CV, however again it is important to be concise and to the point. Detail your teaching responsibilities, including subjects and levels taught, and a brief summary of the school (class sizes and any provisions). Focus on specific responsibilities and achievements in each role, and include observation gradings and teaching results for each school (where relevant). Begin with your most recent role and work backwards from there.

Related Experience
If you have previous employment experience you consider relevant to your work in education, briefly describe the role and how the skills involved apply to your current practice.
 
Qualifications

Teaching qualifications
Begin with your teaching qualification; outline the teaching qualification gained, institution and the year you qualified. If you are an NQT provide an outline of your course.

Additional qualifications
This does not need to be every qualification you've ever gained however if you feel it is relevant to the position you are applying for then make sure it is included. We would suggest definitely including any degrees (including post-graduate) and A Levels with results, dates and where you obtained these qualifications.

Professional Development
Employers will also want to see that you are keeping up to date with new initiatives and always looking to improve so also include details of any CPD courses that are relevant.

Interests

This is where we would suggest putting a little about yourself and your interests such as family, sports, languages, or anything else that allows you to show some personality traits whilst still remaining professional.
 
Check it again and again for correct spelling and grammar and ensure the information you are providing is correct and up to date.
